1) The Vaccination game

Learning Days Ltd has been working in partnership with Middlesbrough PCT and Redcar and Cleveland PCT to develop an educational game to engage KS3 and KS4 pupils.  The Vaccination Game has been developed to raise awareness of the importance of immunisation to encourage take up of a variety of vaccination programmes in local schools.

The Vaccines vs the Germies vaccination game is played in groups of 6 within a class. This game, and the corresponding introduction and teaching session, is suitable for delivery by non-specialists, such as class tutors. It lasts around 30 minutes and consists of playing cards and a battlefield worksheet.

Germie card setPupils gain territory in the battlefield by correctly answering a series of multiple choice questions on topics such as herd immunity and the following diseases - measles, mumps, HPV, rubella, diphtheria, polio and tetanus. The questions on HPV make the game a valuable tangible product to use when engaging with 12 - 13 year old girls.

As part of the original project all secondary schools in the Teesside area will be receiving free game sets over the coming months.

Carol McArdleCarol McArdle, South Tees Area Children’s Public Health Nurse Specialist, initiated the initial project and said, “I see the vaccination game as a great tool for increasing uptake of the forthcoming HPV programmes in our area. It will enable our target groups to make more informed decisions and raise awareness of the purpose and need for planned immunisation programmes.”

Children and their parents are also being lined up as targets through Children’s Centres plus Healthy School Co-ordinators will be asked to promote the resource when visiting schools. The game is also a good training aid - best to remind yourself of the answers before you challenge your staff!

2) 'Going for it' packs

Learning Days Ltd were commissioned by the Aspire Partnership (which was co-owned by the CBI and the North East Chamber of Commerce) to develop a way of delivering information about careers in key industry sectors to secondary school pupils, in the classroom setting.

Following extensive research and development, the ‘Going For It’ series of modules was developed.  These 50 minute lessons promoted a wide range of different career paths in different sectors such as Tourism, IT, Health and Process Industries.

The modules were written in such a way to enable non-specialists to deliver the content and engage the pupils with games and fun activities.
